First is midstream hysteresis. When the 25-day storage limit compels a pipeline to halt, the system starts to deteriorate at once. When crude oil circulation ceases, the absence of agitation lets heavier asphaltenes and waxes settle, and declining temperatures can cause the stationary oil to congeal. Additionally, the water commonly found in flowing crude separates and collects at low points, forming localized spots for fast internal corrosion. Due to these physical and chemical risks, no prudent midstream operator will restart a pipeline that has been idle for weeks without precaution. They must first use robotic sensors—or inspection devices—to check for obstructions and wall erosion, a required safety step that imposes a fixed 14-to-21-day delay before full-scale operations can safely restart.
